HOPEFIELD’s ANNUAL FYNBOS SHOW

On the banks of the Zoute River, just 120km from Cape Town, nestles the small rural town of Hopefield. This little town with a big heart is one of the region’s spring wildflower hotspots and therefore home to the annual Fynbos Show.
Not only are the flowers of the district on display, but the surrounding veld appears to its best advantage during springtime.
The vegetation of the district is divided into four zones. These are Renosterveld, Sandveld, Reedveld and Vlei areas. In the large hall in town a brilliant exhibition tries to present the appearance and composition of these areas to educate its visitors. It is interesting to note that although there is a certain degree of similarity between the types of plants, there is a marked diversity within the combination of species.
The four botanical zones grow as they do mainly due to the topography of the land, the different types of soil and seasonal rainfall of each area. The Hopefield Fynbos Show is carefully prepared, with all those involved specially trained in the correct method of removing plants and picking flowers with minimal damage to the environment.
With the primary emphasis being the preservation of nature, this show does not merely focus on flowers but on the veld in its ecological entirety. Guides are available in the hall to assist visitors with all the botanical and common names of the plants which are shown in displays or on species-specific tables. There is also a herbarium and aromatic plants section to delight the other sense.
Tractor rides to the veld are available so visitors can see Fynbos in its natural state.
The town can be accessed from the R27 and N7 via the R45.
