The Hopefield Community Forum, formed in 2011 by The Merry Widow Country Inn in Hopefield, is not only talking about it, but implementing Responsible Tourism! This group consists of volunteers with a passion for the Nature and People of Hopefield and forms part of other volunteer projects in the town.
The biggest one of these projects to date is the Hopefield Community Food Garden. They are working closely with the "All Saints" Anglican Church, SBTO, Food Basket for Africa & Farming God's Way.
On 23 May the first phase of this project kicked off with the planting of 100 fruit trees with GreenPop, The Anglican Church, Bacardi and the SBTO.
It was a truly fantastic day with educational value for both the kids and the community. With the support of so many passionate individuals simply arriving to help with a spade and a smile, they made this garden "dream" a reality.
Bacardi sponsored 100 trees and GreenPop supplied the compost as well as the educational program. The Church baked bread with flour sponsored by Eureka Mills and the Hopefield Forum made soup for all the volunteers. SBTO assisted with money for fuel to bringing GreenPop to Hopefield.
The second phase of this project will consist of a self sustained garden that will be launched in August in conjunction with Food Basket for Africa, Farming God’s way, Breadline Africa, Pick n Pay and the SBTO.
Volunteers will receive seedlings that can be planted at their own houses at the same time in exchange for a few hours of labor in the Community Garden. In return they will receive the necessary skills on how to grow their own gardens and how to overcome the challenges in order to sustain their own gardens.
The third phase will be to upgrade "Tant Bessie se Fontein" on the same grounds. This use to be the fountain where the very first Hopefielders went to get their fresh water and wash their clothes but became a sight for sore eyes over the years.
Phase four will be where the businesses in the Hopefield will get the chance to get involved and bring their suggestions on how to become involved in this community garden and add ways in which money can be generated for the community.
The Hopefield Community Project aims at making this a space where tourists, local and from their own town, will come and sit down, partake, learn and hopefully inspire other towns to do the same.
This is a project for Hopefield, by Hopefield in an effort to give more families the opportunity to have healthy, self sustained organic fruit and vegetables.
Well done to Lizana de Jongh, our Development Chairperson on the Executive Commity for the initiative and drive. We are very proud of Hopefield!
