A guide to the perfect Langebaan weekend break
As the days slowly warm up, and the Atlantic Ocean is almost starting to look like a viable two-minute flash-swim option, it’s time to start planning those summer breaks from the city. Langebaan has remained a favourite among the laid-back, unpretentious towns along the wild and beautiful West Coast.
There’s something to please everyone in Langebaan. While the active at heart can spend hours in the water, wind surfing and kite surfing, those seeking an even tan can exchange the icy lagoon for the far-stretching white sand of the main beach and the kids can enjoy splashing around in the calm, shallow waters of the lagoon. There are also boat rides to enjoy, seafood to devour and lazy afternoons to be spent enjoying a beer while the sun slowly sinks behind the horizon.
Here is a simple guide to kick-start the planning for an epic summer holiday in Langebaan.
Where to stay
The best way to stay in Langebaan is by renting a holiday home for at least a week – more if you can – and invite the entire family or a large group of friends for a summer holiday of note. Langebaan Beach Cottage is a top spot to do this as it’s close to the beach (a five-minute walk from Sandbaai), but also in a quiet neighbourhood a few minutes away from the main drag. The house sleeps six and boasts a massive open plan kitchen and living area that walks out onto a private garden with outside braai and a patio on which to spend the warm summer nights. From R1000 a night for the house, tel 082-469- 3352, www.langebaanbeachcottage.co.za.
There are, off course, many other self-catering options around town. Visitwww.langebaanholidayhomes.co.za or www.langebaanreservations.com for more house options. If you’re looking for something smaller, then the flats surrounding the golf course inside Langebaan Country Estate are ideal. www.langebaanestate.co.za.
Not keen to cook or clean? Spoil yourself at Le Mahi, a boutique guesthouse a short drive from the main beach. You’ll feel right at home with the personal care and attention that the owner herself gives to all her guests. The rooms have DSTV, free wifi and a small, private patio or balcony. Breakfast is something to remember, especially the fruity starter, which is different every morning. From R390 a person a night sharing, tel 082-895-9891, email info@ lemahi.co.za, www.lemahi.co.za.
Where to eat
You can’t go on a seaside holiday without indulging in a good portion of freshly caught seafood. Do this at Friday Island where the catch of the day is not just one, but a short list of fishy treats listed on a black board. Find them five minutes north from the main beach as you stroll along the soft sand. Tel 022-772-2506
Enjoy one of the West Coast’s most impressive seaside braais at BoesmanlandPlaaskombuis. Invite your family and friends and fill up a large wooden table right beside the crashing waves, tucking into a grand seafood buffet. Tel 022-772-1564
A scenic drive through the beautiful West Coast National Park will bring you to Geelbek Restaurant– the building is a national monument. Tuck into a fragrant Malay curry or something lighter like quiche and salad or a monster slice of cake.
Tel 022-772-2134
What to do

For a more relaxed morning, head to Club Mykonos and board the Sea Stallion II for a laid-back trip across the lagoon and back to the harbour. The views are beautiful, the air is fresh and the cash bar will be open. Tel 022-772-0550
