BOATING REGULATIONS
Any person intending to handle a vessel in the water area must apply for a permit for such vessel on the form as determined by the board for this purpose. This permit must be correctly displayed on the vessel.
CERTIFICATE OF COMPETENCY (SKIPPERS LICENCE)
All persons intending to handle a vessel on the Langebaan lagoon must be in possession of a valid certificate of competence (COC) for the specific category of vessel and area.
BUOYANCY
All vessels operating in the lagoon require a buoyancy declaration/flotation certificate, for that specific category of vessel.
Skiboats, mini-skiboats, dinghies, inflatable boats and other vessels with one or more outboard motors, operating in the waters under the control of the South African National Parks, are required to carry the equipment specified below:
- One buoyancy aid (SABS 1417/1987) per person aboard
- One unexpired approved projectile flare set
- One unexpired hand-held smoke marker
- One waterproof torch, spare batteries and bulb, for vessels operating after sunset
- Approved fire extinguisher, one per engine.
- 2 oars or paddles, on rowing boats only.
- Capsize rope for use when vessel is inverted in the water
- Proper patent anchor and chain, with a suitable length of rope for the area of operation
- Length of chain: Vessels of 6m and more – at least 5m Vessels under 6m – at least 3m
- Length of rope: At least 50m
- Watertight capsize bottle attached to vessel with rope readily accessible in event of capsize
- Suitable air bellows and repair kit, required on inflatable vessels
- Spares and tools adequate for the purpose of carrying out emergency repairs to machinery and essential equipment aboard
- Owners details on trailer – Name and Telephone number
SPECIAL CONDITIONS APPLYING TO PERSONAL WATERCRAFT (PWC): WET-BIKES, AQUA-BIKES, JET-SKIS
- All PWC owners wishing to use Langebaan Lagoon will be required to join the West Coast Personal Watercraft Association (WC PWCA)
- In joining, operators of such craft will be expected to undergo a simple practical test in handling the craft under different conditions
- Operators will be expected to wear a unique, identifiable vest which corresponds to the number on the craft and is unique to a specific individual
- Specific areas of operation will be applicable and will be explained during this application process
- All other safety requirements (certificate of fitness for the craft and certificate of competency for the operator) required before, will still be applicable
- Once membership has been ensured, South African National Parks/West Coast National Park will issue the prospective operator/owner with a boat permit for the craft, allowing him/her to operate the PWC on the Langebaan Lagoon
ALL PWC’S ARE REQUIRED TO CARRY THE FOLLOWING SAFETY EQUIPMENT
