1st PATERNOSTER SEAFOOD FESTIVAL - A GREAT SUCCESS FOR THE TOWN OF PATERNOSTER
The Saldanha Bay Tourism Organisation in conjunction with the Paternoster Village Tourism Association and volunteers consisting of businesses and locals successfully hosted their first Paternoster Seafood Festival.
The quiet fishing village of Paternoster was positively buzzing with an estimated 3000 attendees on the day. Both locals and visitors from far and wide celebrated the opening of the crayfish season and the start of summer on the West Coast. Not even the strong winds could tame the excitement.
The day kicked of with a Fun run and Mountain Biking challenge with prizes sponsored for winners as well as runner ups. A total of 38 stalls each had a great turn over and items ranging from bokkoms to crayfish as well as various high quality locally produced arts and crafts had visitors spoiled for choice. A kiddies entertainment area with face painting, jumping castles and candy floss, run by Marietjie Talbot, made sure that the children had just as much fun as the adults.
Our MC for the day, comedian Rob van Vuuren, began the stage activities with an exciting talk with Grant Christie, an inspirational young man currently in our area. Grant is on route from Alexander bay in the Northern Cape to Kosi Bay on the Mozambique coastline on a personal journey, whilst raising awareness on the preservation of the coastline. The Silver Falcons followed this up with an extraordinary flight demo and commentary from Captain Christo Jonker.
With the main focus of the festival being local development, the live entertainment largely consisted of local talent which included Clarify, Due West, Chris Rain and the Young Stars. Mari Minaar from Gauteng and Gordon Makay from Cape Town also impressed the crowd and had old and young dancing from early morning till late afternoon.
There were various give-aways from the stage which included accommodation vouchers, a mountain bike, merchandise, beach buggy rides, meal vouchers and quality wines to name but a few. This will ensure that the visitors over the weekend will be coming back to explore Paternoster and surrounds again and again.
The SBTO would like to thank the organisers and committee of Paternoster Tourism and everyone involved, especially Rina Wenhold, Riette Laubsher, Manerva Clarke, Sanet Langenhoven and Lorika Malan for their hard work and efforts, and a very special word of thanks to all the sponsors. You have largely contributed to the success of the festival and we look forward to working with all of you to make next year’s festival not only bigger but also even better.
Thank you to each and every person who attended the festival and contributed to the wonderful gees on the day without any incidents. The money raised will contribute towards a day outing for the elderly of the Paternoster Community as well as the arrangements for the 2014 festival. We look forward to having you there again next year.
