Lambertsbay Bird Island officially open! |
<< go back to news |
Bird Island recently celebrated 100 years since Cape Gannets first colonised the Island, making it one of the only 6 breeding colonies of this vulnerable seabird worldwide. The colony of Cape Gannets on Bird Island is one of only 6 in the world, there are 3 in SA and 3 in Namibia.
On average, and through 9 months of the year, there are about 17 000 birds on the island, which form 7% of the world's population of this species. During non-breeding winter months (May - August) large numbers of adults usually desert the island to destinations as far as Angola and Mozambique.
Now the Island boasts a Penquin pool to house live penguins during school holidays, a Cuvier's Beaked Whale skeletal on display in the Island's new exhibition building, touch pool displays, a small curio shop, not to mention the life sized whale replica and cormorant nest display.
The Island offers the best seabird viewing facilities on the continent. Experience all of this on your doorstep with the opening of Bird Island.
